The Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, an organization of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was established in 1994 to improve the nutrition and well-being of Americans. Toward this goal, the Center focuses its efforts on two primary objectives: 1.Advance and promote dietary guidance for all Americans, and 2.Conduct applied research and analyses in nutrition and consumer economics.

The Harvard School of Pubic Health (HSPH) claims that its healthy eating plate is a better blueprint for eating a balanced diet than is that of The Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. HSPH claims to be free of “the influence of powerful agricultural interests, which is not the recipe for healthy eating,” says Walter Willet, professor of epidemiology and nutrition and chair of the department of nutrition at HSPH.
