People use “ORCID” or “ORCID iD” interchangeably, but what they’re talking about is a 16-digit number and the associated record (sometimes called a profile) that stores automatic links to all your research and links all your research with you. By allowing trusted organizations to add your research information to your ORCID record, you can spend more time conducting your research and less time managing it.

Your ORCID iD is always publicly visible, and you control the visibility settings for all other content in your ORCID record. Any information added by a trusted organization will always be visible to them regardless of the visibility setting that you choose; if you have given them permission to do so, they will also be able to update the information they've added.
There are three visibility settings: everyone, trusted parties, or only me.
Authorize a connection between GSU and ORCID to allow GSU to write employment information to your ORCID record. Authenticated employment information assures funders and publishers that you are affiliated with the University.
Click here to authorize a connection. On the next screen, click Connect.
Once you connect to GSU, the employment section of your ORCID record will show Georgia State as the Source instead of your name.
If you already had an ORCID record, you can delete the GSU Employment section that has you as the source once the GSU source is connected.
The trust-building and time-saving power of your ORCID iD is unlocked when you connect your iD and enable information to flow into your record. Your name, published name, biography, and email addresses need to be added manually, but all other fields can be populated by connecting your iD with other information systems.
Include your iD when prompted to do so in manuscript submission systems, grant applications, Faculty Measures, and many more, and, with your permission, your information can be exchanged between many of these systems, so you don’t have to enter it manually. This saves you time and ensures the use of quality data that you have approved and your organizations have certified.
The most time-consuming work in setting up your record initially is adding your publications and other works. The best way to start is to use the Search & Link Wizards. Watch a short video about how to add works to your ORCID record using a Search & Link wizard.
For journal publications, the CrossRef Metadata Search indexes articles with DOIs. Bielefeld Academic Search Engine and Elsevier Scopus are also expansive.
The Search & Link CrossRef and DataCite will ask you to Authorize a connection, which will then grant them access to write new items to your record when you use your ORCid on newly published works.

You can also manually add work if needed, or import works from a BibTeX file.
Keep in mind that once your ORCid record is complete, you can use it to populate other sources and never need to re-enter that data in another location!
The funding section of the record has a Search & Link Wizard that connects to DimensionsWizard. Dimension's data includes grants from funding organizations worldwide, such as the NIH and NSF in the United States, the UK Research Councils and Wellcome Trust in the UK, the Austrian Research Council, and over fifty others. You can add grants manually as well.
