Information Literacy Skills for Career and Lifelong Learning

Course Overview

This course is an introduction to the research, technology and literacy skills needed to succeed in the new economy. Students will be introduced to digital literacy, the ability to use digital tools, and learn how to use university digital tools to communicate with peers and produce and store objects. Students will be introduced to data literacy, the ability to read data, write and work with data, and communicate data in proper context while understanding the political and cultural ways data is used. And students will learn research strategies to find and evaluate information especially related to career goals. 

There will also be an overview of soft skills needed for interpersonal relationships including emotional intelligence, collaboration, critical thinking, time management, etc. And lastly, students will examine online privacy and security and digital ethics including a look at copyright and artificial intelligence (AI). 

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students: 

  1. will be able to use university technology to demonstrate how to communicate and collaborate with instructors and peers. 
  2. will be able to use university technology to organize and manage information.
  3. will be able to evaluate and critique the purpose of information and data. 
  4. Students will know how to verify and contextualize data encountered.

  5. will demonstrate how to use databases and online tools for career guidance (to discover requirements, expectations, and estimated salaries for an intended career path).

  6. will be able to create digital projects.
