NVivo - Photovoice Projects: Home

A Photovoice Project

Look at photos of GSU's campus and discuss:

  • How does what we see in these photos SUPPORT or NOT SUPPORT the GSU strategic intention of creating "campus spaces [that are] the most inviting and rewarding for our students' collective experience" and "where people want to learn, study, work, live, play and connect"?
  • If in your observations they do NOT support the strategic intention, then what can we or others do about it to bring positive change?

Why use Classifications and Attributes?

In NVivo, you can Autocode a transcript by Speaker Name to create a Case for each participant (how-to for Windows and Mac) during that process, it also creates a Case Classification in which you can create attributes about the participants to use for comparing themes in their data across different values of the attribute. For example: If you have a theory that GSU student reflections on the photos will be different from staff whose may be different from faculty, then you could create an attribute called GSU Status with the different values of Student, Staff, Faculty, and others (parent of student, etc.).

STEPS for Creating Attributes and Values:
  1. In NVivo blue navigation bar at left, in Cases area, click Case Classifications to have the case classification name listed in white pane.
  2. Right-click on case classification name, and select New Attribute.
  3. In New Attribute popup window, give the attribute a name.
  4. Still in New Attribute popup window, click the Values tab.
  5. Click Add button, and then type or paste in the first attribute value name.
  6. Repeat above step for each attribute value, and when finished, click the OK button.

STEPS for Assigning Attribute Values to Cases:

  2. Double-click the case classification name to open the case classification sheet in a tabbed window to the right.
  3. For each participant, use dropdown to assign the appropriate attribute value for each attribute.
