The Open Oscars all-campus event is the sister event for the Open for Student Success Symposium at Georgia State University. The mission of the Open Oscars is to facilitate a peer-nomination process where faculty are celebrated by their colleagues and students for their use of open educational resources in course instruction. This event is coordinated by GSU's Student Government Association and Student Public Interest Research Group under the mentorship of GSU library information professionals.

What are Open Educational Resources?

As defined by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, Open Educational Resources (OER) "are learning, teaching and research materials in any format and medium that:

  • reside in the public domain or are under copyright that have been released under an open license [AND]
  • that permit no-cost access, re-use, re-purpose, adaptation and redistribution by others.”

Nomination Criteria

Nominees must:
  • Be a current educator at Georgia State University
  • Have used, adapted, or produced an open educational resource for course instruction at Georgia State University
  • Meet the description of the category for which they are being nominated

Tentative Nomination Categories

Best Animation in OER:

the award for a GSU educator who produced an open educational resource in an animated/video format. 

Best OER Cross-Collaboration:

the award for a GSU educator who produced an open educational resource in collaboration with an educator not affiliated with GSU. 

Best Documentary Filmmaker in OER:

the award for a GSU educator who facilitated the publication of a student-produced open educational resource.

Best International OER Adaptation:

the award for a GSU educator who adapted an open educational resource by producing a translation of the original in another language.

Best Recurring OER Character:

the award for a tenure-track or tenured GSU educator who used an open educational resource in course instruction.

Best Sound Effects in OER:

the award for a GSU educator who created an open educational resource in audio format.

Best Supporting OER Character:

the award for a GSU educator who adapted an open educational resource to include charts, graphs, images or other visual content to enhance the reader experience.  

Biggest OER Advocate:

the award for a non-tenure-track GSU educator who used an open educational resource in course instruction.

Locally Grown OER Hero:

the award for a GSU educator who used an open educational resource published through the University System of Georgia in course instruction.

OER Accessibility Champion:

the award for a GSU educator who created an accessible adaptation of a less-accessible open educational resource. 

Most Adaptive OER Crewmember:

the award for a GSU educator who adapted an open educational resource to include references relevant to their individual students.  

Most Innovative OER Producer:

the award for a GSU educator who created an open educational resource for an emerging field or on a timely subject.

Most Unique OER Character:

the award for a GSU educator who created an original open educational resource.

Rising Star for OER:

the award for a GSU Graduate Teaching Assistant who used an open educational resource in course instruction.
