Honors Class on ATL Historic Harlots!

In Fall 2024 I got the chance to teach a whole class on my ATL historic harlots to GSU 1st-year Honors students!

  • The semester began with an introduction to my "Historic Harlots of Old Atlanta" (HHATL) project and related scholarship to ground us in the sociohistorical context of prostitution in Atlanta, the South, and the US for the time.
  • We shifted to ‘Hands-On Research Days’ to explore different resources used to create the HHATL project:
    • Online archival sources (historical news, Census records, city directories, data/statistics, maps, etc.)
    • Zotero to collect and organize research resources
    • Excel PivotTables to examine HHATL data
  • For the Final Project: Students submitted a brief ‘pitch’ for content that they’d contribute to the HHATL project if they had more time [or were interested in working more on the project with me in the future].
