A helpful guide for student assistants working in Special Collections.

When to Involve...

To ensure that the appropriate party respond to requests for assistance, this document provides guidance on when to contact personnel, enhance coordination between the Library and GSU Police, and provide seamless support for students, visitors, staff, and faculty.

When to Involve GSU Police Department

  • A person is injured
  • A person requires transportation to the hospital or emergency room (GSU Police will coordinate)
  • A person is threatening violence to self/others
  • A person is suspected of alcohol poisoning or drug use
  • A person is unconscious
  • A weapon is present
  • There’s destruction of property
  • A crowd is present (disorderly conduct including excessive, loud conversations)
  • Suspicion of fire or flood

Call GSU Police at 404-413-3333 to report the emergency, providing as much information as possible. If additional assistance is needed, the department head or designated on-call supervisor should be notified.

Notify the department head or on-call supervisor of all emergency situations immediately.

Assist emergency personnel as requested and as appropriate.

Write an incident report.

When to Involve Library Security Officers

  • Department head or designated on-call supervisor requests assistance for violators of library conduct policies
  • Emergency doors are activated and alarm sounds
  • External doors are malfunctioning

  • Library personnel and security officers request assistance for violators of library conduct policies

When to Involve GSU Counseling Center

  • Faculty, staff, family or friends concerned about a student who may be in a crisis and is not in immediate life threatening danger or is in danger of harming another.
