Reference training

Introduction

Question graphicQuestions! We get Questions!

This program will teach you to how to determine what information a person needs as well as help you learn about the library's information resources.  Whether they are students, GSU employees, or visitors, our goal is to connect people with the information they need and, along the way, teach them to be better consumers and users of information.

This program  also has information, exercises, and quizzes that are specific to academic libraries and Georgia State University.  In addition to these learning activities, you will be prompted to discuss certain elements with your supervisor to learn information specific to your campus and job responsibilities.

Note/Attribution: This program is based on Ohio Library Council's reference training program for public librarians. You will find links to some modules in that program along with content with have generated and selected especially relevant to academic libraries and Georgia State University.

Objectives for Unit 1

  • Describe how reference work supports the library's mission.
  • Identify several ways the library provides reference services.
  • Become familiar with directional, technical, and reference question types.
  • Manager's Guide to Unit 1

How does reference fit into the library's mission?

Whether the patron's needs are directional/informational, technology, or reference, answers to all of these contribute to the library's mission.

Read The Library's Strategic Intentions. While reading, think about how your job contributes to these goals. What different types of questions are addressed?

As a member of the Georgia State University Library team, you are valued for your contribution toward these goals. If you'd like to read more about the library's role, we suggest the Dean of Library's Welcome statement on the LIbrary website. (Optional)

Reference Services at University Library

Visit the Talk with a Librarian page on the library website to learn more about the ways librarians and reference specialist offer help, including:

  • Walk-in
  • Chat reference (chat widget, text message and email)
  • Research appointments/consultations
  • "Help & Answers" are our FAQs

Research Appointments

Perimeter students or faculty can book a research appointment with a Perimeter librarian. Some handy things to know about appointments (sometimes called research consultations):

  • Good for one-on-one help
  • Online or in-person
  • Pick a specific librarian or any available at a selected time slot.
  • Friendly URL is lib.gsu.edu/appt
  • Librarians/Ref Specialists set their own availability and can link to their appointment page in LibGuides, email, or the library directory.

Atlanta subject librarians each set their own system of appointment-making, typically by emailing the librarian. Locate the appropriate Atlanta Subject librarian on the Librarians page on the library website.

Question Types and Exercise

You will get questions at the service/reference desk, on the phone, email, virtual reference and even as you move around the library and campus.

Let’s explore different types of questions you might be asked by library patrons.

Once you finish the exercise, you're done with this unit! Show the results of the exercise to your supervisor and discuss how your job contributes to the mission of the library and the university.
