SOCI 8342 - NVivo Assignments

REQUIREMENTS - Qualitative Content Analysis Assignment, Part 1 (from Fall 2025 Syllabus)

Qualitative Content Analysis Assignment – For this assignment you are asked to build their own data set using publicly available content of your choice. Your data set must be text based content. The size of your data set will vary based on the amount of text in your documents. At a minimum, you should aim to have at least 7 different source documents with at least one full page of text each in order to have enough material for fruitful coding.

Part 1.

Coding:

Develop a research question that can be answered using the data available to you. Follow these steps to engage in substantive coding.

  • Import your data into NVivo
  • Run a Word Frequency Query
  • Create a World Cloud
  • Run a Text Search Query
  • Create a Word Tree
  • Create at least 5 codes for this data set based on the information you obtain in your queries. Code your data into these codes.
  • Create attributes, classifications, and run a matrix [or crosstab] query (as needed) to help clarify the relationship between attributes and codes.

See Syllabus in iCollege for remaining assignment requirements.

Handouts + Example NVivo Project Files + Classification Sheets

US Presidential Inaugural Addresses

Use the example NVivo Project Files below as a sandbox to explore the coding and for using 'Attributes' (in the Classification Sheets) for comparison purposes. The project file contains the Inaugural Addresses given by US Presidents up until the 2nd Trump term (n=60). The 'GOD' codes have the most thorough coding, so they might be the best to use for practice purposes.
