Qualitative Research

Purpose: to understand social phenomenon from a holistic perspective

Sampling and sample size: small sample sizes with a non-random sample

Data type: interviews, focus groups, ethnographies, open ended-questions

Note: There are exceptions to sampling & sample size and data type

Quantitative Research

Purpose: to understand a subset of social phenomenon through statistical analysis

  • “Narrow-Angle Lens”

Sampling and sample size: large sample sizes with a representative sample

Data type: surveys, scales, and other numerical data

Note: There are exceptions to sampling & sample size and data type

Mixed Methods

Purpose: to understand a social phenomenon through statistical analysis and a holistic perspective

Sampling and sample size: both small qualitative and large quantitative samples

Data type: BOTH qualitative and quantitative data

  • For qualitative: interviews, focus groups, ethnographies, open ended-questions
  • For quantitative: surveys, scales, and other numerical data
