Research Data Services @ Georgia State University Library: WORKSHOPS ~ Data Visualization & Mapping

Below are the workshops we offer on data visualization and mapping -- check out the library calendar for specific days/times and to register, and learn more about getting RDS@GSU Data Certified.

Tableau Workshop Series

Tableau Workshop Series

This workshop series introduces users to Tableau Public data visualization software. See the Tableau research guide here.

Tableau 1: Tableau Data Visualization - Getting Started

This workshop will introduce users to the basics of using Tableau, a powerful data visualization tool.

Workshop Topics:

  • Importing data
  • Navigating the Tableau interface
  • Creating simple visualizations (worksheets, dashboards and stories)
  • Saving, publishing and sharing visualization

Prerequisites: None.

Workshop materials available here.

Tableau 2: Tableau Data Visualization - Beyond Basics

This workshop teaches more advanced skills for those who have familiarity with the basics of importing data and constructing basic visualizations in Tableau.

Workshop Topics:

  • Customizing worksheets, dashboards, and stories
  • Working with more complex visualization types
  • Adding calculations to graphs

Prerequisites: None.

Workshop materials available here.

GIS Mapping Workshop Series

GIS Mapping Workshop Series

This workshop series introduces users to ArcGIS mapping software. See the GIS research guide here.

GIS 1: Georeferencing Digitalized Maps and Aerial Photos with ArcGIS

Do you have a map that you would like to use in ArcMap or even Google Earth? This workshop will teach you the steps involved in making a digitized map usable in ArcMap and Google Earth Pro.

Workshop Topics:

  • Assigning latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates to non-spatial raster map data

  • Using georeferences maps in ArcGIS and Google Earth

Prerequisites: None.

GIS 2: Extracting Features from Digitized Maps with ArcGIS

Digitized maps often contain features and layers that you might want to extract for specific projects. This workshop will teach you how to create pinpoints, lines, and polygon GIS data from map images.

Workshop Topics:

  • Creating pinpoints, lines, and polygon GIS data from map images

  • Importing pinpoints, lines, and polygon GIS data into ArcGIS Online

Prerequisites: No prerequisites required, but the following workshops provide useful a foundation:

  • Georeferencing Digitalized Maps and Aerial Photos with ArcGIS

GIS 3: Intro to Creating Web Maps Using ArcGIS Online

Does part of your research include site-specific locations?  Would an interactive web map that includes photos of these locations help contextualize your research?  Or are you interested in incorporating mapping into your class assignments?  If so, this workshop will teach you how to create online maps that can display point locations with pop up text and images.

Workshop Topics:

  • Navigating ArcGIS Online
  • Importing spreadsheet data
  • Creating pinpoint locations
  • Displaying images and text in pinpoint pop-ups
  • Embedding interactive maps into blogging and website platforms such as Edublogs

Prerequisites: No prerequisites required, but the following workshops provide useful a foundation:

  • Georeferencing Digitalized Maps and Aerial Photos with ArcGIS
  • Extracting Features from Digitized Maps with ArcGIS
