POLS 4422: NGOs and World Politics: Find Books

A starting point for research on NGOs and world politics.

Get Books From Other Libraries

Use the options listed below to find books not in the GSU library:

1.  GilFind  allows you to search and request books from any University System of Georgia library. To use, select "University System of Georgia" from the drop down next to the search box, then, after you find the book you need, click the "sign in for more options"  link, then select the school you want the book to come from to have the book transferred to the GSU Library. Requests take anywhere from 4-7 days to arrive at the GSU library.

2.  You can also check out books in person from any University System of Georgia library or Emory University's libraries using your PantherCard. Call the library before you go for information on their borrowing policies.

3.  If you still are not finding enough information, use the WorldCat database, which allows you to search the collections of libraries throughout the world. Books located in WorldCat can be ordered via the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) ILLiad system. To do so, first locate the book you would like to request in the WorldCat database. Then, log into  ILLiad with your campusID and password to place a request. ILL requests  for books may take two weeks or more to arrive at the GSU Library, so plan ahead.

Find Books in the GSU University Library

Search the GSU Library GIL-Find Catalog
Note: Using this feature will take you away from this subject guide.

For more complex searches, use the Advanced Search option.
Search Tips:
Depending on your topic, you may want to search for books on:
  • Your broad topic
  • Your narrow topic
  • Your specific NGO, without including your broad/narrow topic
  • Your broad and/or narrow topic AND your NGO
  • NGOs in general
Searching for books on your broad topic, should be fairly easy. Example:
Searching for books on your narrow topic may be a little more difficult if nothing has been written on it or if the library doesn't own any books about it.
Searching for books on your specific NGO should be easy, assuming the library has any books about it in its collection.
Searching for books on your specific NGO and your broad or narrow topic, can be a little more difficult because there may not have been any books written about the connection between the two.
Searching for books on NGOs in general can be tricky. For example, if you use "NGOs" as your search term you may miss books that include the phrases non-governmental organizations or nongovernmental organizations in their title. To ensure you are locating all books owned by the GSU library on the topic of NGOs:
  1. Use the Advanced Search option.
  2. Type the phrase non-governmental organizations in the first search box and choose Subject from the "All Fields' drop down menu. By doing so you will use the library's controlled vocabulary of subjects, which will locate all the books owned by the library on the topic.
You can narrow your results to a specific country, region, or issue, by using additional keywords or terms in the remaining search fields. However, don't be too specific (don't add too many additional search terms) or you may not find enough information.
