OpenStax @ GSU

Georgia State University was accepted as one of 50 schools to participate in the 2022-23 OpenStax Institutional Partnership.

Open Education Week 2023

The libraries on the Downtown Atlanta and Dunwoody campuses also kicked-off Open Education Week by handing out informational materials and stress-relief trinkets! We educated patrons about open educational resources (OERs) and OpenStax, and we explained the differences between OERs and library-provided resources (like O’Reilly for Higher Education and Sage Research Methods). We also hosted live polls on both campuses!

At the Downtown Atlanta campus, we asked two questions with the intent to: (1) capture the 2023 student experience at GSU, and (2) show what students are forced to do when their textbooks are too expensive. We had 143 participants over the course of 12 hours of tabeling. Here’s what we learned:

The Dunwoody campus asked two questions as well:

Here are the results:

What do you do when the textbook is too expensive to buy?

There were a total of 387 responses to the second question!!

Thank you to everyone who helped to make the Open Education Week tabeling event a success!

Open Access Week 2022

Thank you for celebrating International Open Access Week with the Georgia State University Library! If you were unable to attend one of our presentations, you can access the recordings at the links below.

Open for Student Success: Ensuring Equity with Open Educational Resources in Course Content

Presenters: Librarians Mary Ann Cullen and Charlene V. Martoni

Description: The benefits of Open Educational Resources (OER) go beyond cost savings to students! In this session, two librarians will discuss how adopting, adapting, authoring, and assigning OpenStax textbooks and other OER contribute to student success for all students, especially students who frequently experience obstacles to success. In addition to equalizing textbook costs, OER can be adapted to student needs or course content and incorporate diverse voices and perspectives. Open Pedagogy assignments can allow students to express their own voices as well as engage them in meaningful assignments in which they learn about finding high-quality sources and using information ethically and legally.

Creative Commons Licenses

Presenter: Librarian Lauren Bellard

Description: You might have heard about the Creative Commons and its associated licenses, but in this session, we'll dive deeper into copyright, openly licensed materials, and how they relate to Open Education Resources.

Intro to Preprints and Green Open Access

Presenter: Librarian Denise George

Description: We'll discuss a brief history of preprints. We'll also talk about what it means for a journal to offer Green Open Access options. We'll discuss how pre print use has escalated over the last few decades and more recently with COVID-19. We’ll look at several preprint platforms and discuss benefits and risks in this rapidly growing landscape for scholarly communication.
