ENGL 1102 (Weaver) - English Composition II (Digital Projects): Podcasts

Creating a Podcast with Audacity

You'll need a computer with Audacity installed, a microphone, and a quiet space to record. Audacity is a free and open-source platform that can be used to edit audio files to create your podcasts. Because there is a large community of people who use this free tool, there is a great deal of documentation and help available online. **See Dr. Weaver's assignment sheet for guidance and requirements for this format.

Recording Audio

Be sure to connect the microphone to a computer and then launch Audacity. Use the tools in the top ribbon to record and playback audio.

  • A digital recording device, such as a mobile phone, can be substituted for the microphone, but the quality may be less than ideal. If you record on another device, you'll need to import your audio file into Audacity, then edit and save it.
  • To import additional music or audio files:
    • Go to File > Import > Audio to put the audio onto a new track.

    • If the timing is not right, use the time shift tool to adjust it, until all is in sync.

Editing Audio

Begin by listening closely to the recorded audio and determining what edits need to be made. If you recorded on an external device, like a smartphone, import the audio file into Audacity to edit it. Save your edits often! For more detailed descriptions of the cursor and editing tools, click here.

Editing Audio in Audacity

After editing, export the audio file to .mp3 using the following steps:

  1. Go to File > Export
  2. Save as type > MP3 Files
    • Other file types are available, but mp3 is the most universally used format.
