How to view microfilm.
Other Collections
We have three other large microform collections in addition to those listed on the right:
Government Documents - Located in the microfiche cabinets on LN1. Check the location line in the GIL record to determine if a government document is in print or on microfiche.
ERIC Documents - Located in the microfiche cabinets on LN1 and in basement storage. (e.g. ED 295 001)
Numbered Microfilm - Must be requested from storage. (e.g. Micr 480)
Microfilm
Microfilm is a space-saving media format in which documents are photographed and reduced onto either rolls of film or small, translucent cards.
Georgia State University Library has two types of microfilm that we collectively call microforms. We use the term microfilm to refer to rolls of film and microfiche to refer to 4"x6" cards.
How do I know if something is microfilm?
You can determine if an item is microfilm or microfiche by looking at the call number prefix:
Micr. - General Microfilm (e.g. Micr. Z1231 .F4 W94)
News Micr. - Newspaper Microfilm (e.g. News Micr. AN2 .G4 A7262)
Per. Micr. - Periodical Microfilm (e.g. Per. Micr. R15 .A48)
MicrFic - General Microfiche (e.g. MicrFic Z1215 .E923 E282 1985)
Per. MicrFic - Periodical Microfiche (e.g. Per. MicrFic JK1 .U65)
The microform area is located in the back corner of Library North first floor. The microfiche cabinets are on the back wall and the microfilm cabinets are in the middle. However, if the Location field in the GIL record says "In GF Storage" you will need to place a storage retrieval request.
