Definitions

  • Intergovernmental organizations (a.k.a. International Governmental Organizations or IGOs) are organizations comprised primarily of sovereign states (referred to as member states).  The missions of IGOs are usually to promote similar interests (e.g. a culture; a commodity; etc.)
  •  Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are generally non-profit groups not affiliated with any government; it can operate locally, nationally, and/or internationally.  The missions of NGOs are usually to influence public policy – social, economic, etc.
