A brief introduction to Stata

What are Summary Statistics?

Summary Statistics, often referred to as descriptive statistics, are statistical analysis that examine factors about a single variable.

Common summary statistics are the mean, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum. 

Note: For this example, General Social Survey 2016 data (located on "About Stata" tab) is used to produce the summary statistics on respondent age.

Steps to Summary Statistics: Point and Click

1. Go to Statistics > Summaries, tables, and tests > Summary and descriptive statistics > Summary Statistics

2. Under Variables: either (a) type the variable name or (b) select the variable name from the drop down menu. Select "OK"

1. In the Command box type in the following code

sum variablename

Example: sum sex

2. Hit Enter key
