A brief introduction to Stata

**Summary Statistics, often referred to as descriptive statistics, are statistical analysis that examine factors about a single variable. **

**Common summary statistics are the mean, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum. **

Note: For this example, General Social Survey 2016 data (located on "About Stata" tab) is used to produce the summary statistics on respondent age.

1. Go to Statistics > Summaries, tables, and tests > Summary and descriptive statistics > Summary Statistics

**2. Under Variables: either (a) type the variable name or (b) select the variable name from the drop down menu. Select "OK"**

1. In the __Command__ box type in the following code

sum variablename

Example: sum sex

**2. Hit Enter key**
