ESL 0093 - Academic Reading: Finding Books

What is a Call Number?

A call number is the "address" of a book in the library.  PC uses Library of Congress Call Numbers, which may be different from systems you've seen in other libraries. The locations all begin with a letter which represents the broad subject of the book, followed by numbers and other letters. Library staff can direct you to the location of the call number,  then you can look for the letter and number on the spine of the book.

example:

KF4528. C67 2004

Reference Books

Reference Books are a good place to look when you're just learning about a topic.

Search GIL-Find as instructed at the right, then use the location links in the left hand column to choose a campus location or electronic book collection.

E-Books

You can discover and connect to ebooks through GIL-Find.  Do a search, then in the left column under Format, select Electronic.  You will need your PGSU credentials to read ebooks off campus.

Using GIL Find

GIL-Find@GSU is the modern version of the library's catalog.

    • Enter your terms in the search box to perform a quick keyword search, much like searching on the Internet. Remember, a keyword search looks for your search term(s) anywhere in the catalog record.
    • Use the drop-down menu or the Advanced Search option to limit your search to a specific field in catalog records. This can be used to search for a book with a known author or title, or it can be used to search for books by subject.

  • Use links in the left column to narrow your results, especially to see the books that are on your campus. Don't forget - you can request items from other GSU campuses. You'll need to click on the request link under the call number on the individual record of the item. Books usually take 2-3 business days to arrive and can be picked up from the circulation desk. You now need a GIL PIN to borrow books from other libraries, too. Watch this video to learn more about getting your GIL PIN.
  • Once you find a book, check the location, status, and call number. Location will tell you which campus owns the book, status will indicate if the book is available, and the call number will tell you where to find it on the shelf.
