Mendeley

FIRST STEPS: MENDELEY SOFTWARE COMPONENTS

  1. Ceate a free Mendeley Web account.
  2. Download Mendeley Desktop to your personal computer (laptop or desktop).
  3. Install the Mendeley Web Importer into your favorite web browser to import references and documents from the web and academic databases.
  4. Install the Mendeley MS Word Plugin to insert citations and bibliographies into your Microsoft Word documents.
  5. Optional: Download the Mendeley app for iOS or Android to use Mendeley on your mobile device.

ADDING AND ORGANIZING CITATIONS

To add PDFs/references to the Mendeley Desktop:

  • Drag and drop individual PDF files or folders with PDF files into the middle column in Mendeley Desktop. Mendeley will attempt to automatically extract any metadata it detects from the PDF files and create records for them. Any metadata not detected can be added to the record manually, or it can be edited as needed.
  • Create a manual record by clicking File --> Add Entry Manually. After creating a record manually, you can attach a PDF to the record by highlighting the item, then clicking "Add File" from the right menu.
  • Search the web or databases and use the Mendeley Web Importer to add references to your Mendeley library.
