Adding Turabian footnotes in Microsoft Word

Open your Microsoft Word document.

Place the flashing cursor at the end of the sentence where the footnote should be added. See green arrow below.

After you place the flashing cursor, go to the top of the MS Word window and click on References to access Footnote Tool. See yellow highlighted section in image below.

Click on AB Insert Footnote in References Tab. See yellow highlighted section in image below.

This will create a Footnotes section at the bottom of the page. And it will look like the image below.

The cursor will blink on the right side of the number. Use arrow keys to move the cursor to the left of the number.

  • To meet the 6th edition of Turabian Style format, tab the number over once.
  • Type in your citation in accordance with Turabian format for the type of source that is cited.
  • Select the footnote and change the font size and/or type to match the body of the paper.
  • To insert additional footnotes, repeat the steps above; Microsoft Word will automatically number additional footnotes in the appropriate order.
  • See image below for a properly inserted Turabian citation for an electronic journal source at the bottom of a Word doc.

You will notice the superscript number at the end of the sentence in the summary text, as well as the corresponding footnote at the bottom of the page. Highlighted sections in the image below.
