Local Issues: General Research Guide: Finding Books

Making your research relevant by focusing topics close to home.

Your Library PIN

At some point you were e-mailed a five digit PIN for secure access to your library account.  If you have it, great!  If you don't, no worries.  Here is a video telling you how to have it resent.  Remember that it will come to your official GPC e-mail and that you should check the junk mail box.

You need this PIN to renew books and to request books from other libraries.

What is a Call Number?

A call number is the "address" of a book in the library.  GPC uses Library of Congress Call Numbers, which may be different from systems you've seen in other libraries. The locations all begin with a letter, followed by numbers and other letters. Library staff can give you the exact range (book shelf row) where you will find the book.  Then look for the letter and number on the spine of the book.

Lending Policies

  • The PantherCard or another photo ID Card is required for checking out any materials.
  • Library books circulate for the semester, but may be recalled by another user. If you get a recall notice, get the book back or face fines.
  • Popular videos and DVDs circulate for 7 days with a limit of 5 total videos and DVDs.
  • Reserve materials are available upon request a Perimeter College Library Circulation Desk. These materials are placed on reserve by instructors and have varying borrowing periods that range from 1 hour to 1 week.

Using GIL Find

GIL-Find@GPC is the newest version of the library's catalog.

    • Enter your terms in the search box to perform a quick keyword search, much like searching on the Internet. Remember, a keyword search looks for your search term(s) anywhere in the catalog record, not inside the text of the book.

    • Use the drop-down menu or the Advanced Searchr option to limit your search to a specific field in catalog records. This can be used to search for a book with a known author or title, or it can be used to search for books by subject.

  • Use links in the left column to narrow your results, especially to see the books that are on your campus. Don't forget - you can request items from other GPC campuses. You'll need to click on the request link under the call number on the individual record of the item. Books usually take 2-3 business days to arrive and can be picked up from the circulation desk. You now need a GIL PIN to borrow books from other libraries, too. Watch this video to learn more about getting your GIL PIN.
  • Once you find a book, check the location, status, and call number. Location will tell you which campus owns the book, status will indicate if the book is available, and the call number will tell you where to find it on the shelf. If a title is found in multiple locations, you need to click the title to find more information.

GIL Universal Catalog

"Universal Catalog" from the GPC Libraries homepage searches all 31 schools in the University System of Georgia. You may request books from any of those institutions using GIL Express Request.  This video will tell you how.
