Founded by longtime gay activists Dave Hayward and Berl Boykin, Touching Up Our Roots: Georgia's LGBT History Project preserves, promotes and publicizes the contributions that Georgia's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people make to expanding civil rights for all people; creating civic and neighborhood organizations, and enhancing local, regional, and national culture.
While some of the video DVD interviews are presented as documentaries (Dr. Jesse Peel and Reverend Erin Swanson), the bulk take the form of more traditional oral history interviews. Also included are audio CD interviews that were conducted for Touching Up Our Roots' National Public Radio Special, "From Stonewall to the Millennium," which recounts the story of the LGBT community in Atlanta and the Southeast. These audio interviews were sponsored by Story Corps.
These oral histories can be accessed in the Reading Room only. Additional and/or duplicates of these interviews may be found at the Atlanta Public Library, and Emory University's MARBL.
